Hi! It’s me again – and today I’m here to share my latest FREE CROCHET SHAWL PATTERN! It is called the Mediterranean Shawl and I think the inspiration speaks for itself, does it not?
I was standing on the pebbles, where the coast meets the shore, at a favourite spot nicknamed ‘Banana Bay”.
There’s a stretch of road that approaches this bay from a hillside and everyone knows it for its stunning views.
The sweeping bay is one of the most exciting places to sit and watch the Mediterranean Sea. I say exciting, because within these waters is a rip current. Blues shift from clear and deep to sky tones. Closer to the water’s edge, before the waves dramatically crash in a flurry of white foam, there’s a bath of milky turquoise.
These currents make it exceptionally beautiful and also incredibly dangerous, if you’re a novice swimmer.
Believe it or not, some days, you’d be forgiven for thinking the Mediterranean Sea here was just a big lake. It can be so still that it resembles a mirror, reflecting the calm blue sky.
I think you can understand why I was inspired to create the ‘Mediterranean Shawl’! It’s shape is a long, shallow, triangle, just like the view of the sea if you were standing on the beach. Endless waters widening out as your eyes meet the horizon.
A very long shawl – over 2 and a half metres wide! – with long tapering ends. This makes it extra handy for tying the ends together or even onto driftwood for a makeshift play ship mast for the children!
Worked flat, from 1 end to the other, it looks lovely in a gradient or variegated yarn. I chose Zauberball® Cotton by Schoppel Wolle as it is 100% Organic Cotton and widely available. The variegated Blue colourway is number 2343 and this yarn aptly originates from Greece. Being organic, it is environmentally friendly. It’s also vegan, so is animal-kind. Top points for ethics from me!

NOTES
The shawl is worked flat, in rows. Double crochet stitches and chains are used for a filet crochet effect to create a design of concentric triangles.
We increase along one side for the first half of the shawl, and then decrease along the same side for the second half of the shawl to create a triangle. Along the increase edge, a treble stitch is worked at the end of every other row. This taller stitch creates some extra stretch to accommodate for the extra length that naturally occurs with the resulting angle.
At the end of each row you can find the number of stitches completed for that row in squared brackets, like so: “[12 sts]”.

There are 5 sections.
Section 1 – Starting Rows: Rows 1-25.
Section 2 – Increase Pattern Repeat: Rows 26-33.
Rows : Repeat Rows 26-33, 12 more times (or as many times as you prefer if you are adapting the pattern for a different size/weight of yarn).
Section 3 – Center Rows: Rows 130-136. Here we work 3 increase rows, 1 central row, then 3 decrease rows.
Section 4 – Decrease Pattern Repeat: Rows 137-144.
Rows 145-240: Repeat Rows 137-144, 12 more times (or as many times as you repeat the increase rows if you are adapting the pattern). Section 5 – Finishing Rows: Rows 241-265.
ADAPTING THE PATTERN
The written instructions are explained in a way to easily enable you to adjust the size of the shawl.
Sections 2 & 5 can be repeated as many times as you prefer, whether you would like a smaller or larger shawl.

FINISHING OFF
Fasten off and weave in the ends using a yarn needle.
Soak the shawl in luke warm water for 15 minutes (add your preferred yarn soak if you wish).
Lay out 4 of the 5 blocking mats in a line and attach the 5th to the central mat. Block the shawl using pins, opening out the stitches to reveal the design.
